Charlie Sheen and Trashing Hotel Rooms: What's Good for the Celebrity May Not Be Smart for You

Charlie Sheen is making the news today for trashing a hotel room at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. According to TMZ, Sheen avoided arrest (and a blatant violation of his probation) by agreeing to being hospitalized after police arrived at the Plaza's $995/night Eloise Suite in response to a 911 call placed by the hotel itself.

Apparently, cops found a naked and inebriated Steen in the midst of a trashed hotel room which Steen allegedly tossed because he was upset about his wallet being missing. Also there: a woman (some news reports are labelling her an "escort" or "prostitute") who had barracaded herself in either a closet or the bathroom until help arrived to protect her from Charlie's trashing the hotel room antics.

The New York Post is reporting estimated damage to the Plaza Hotel suite as around $7000.00. And what's happening right now to Charlie Sheen, star of the mega TV comedy hit, "Two and a Half Men" on CBS? He's already out of the hospital, no charges pressed against him, apparently no blown probation for his California domestic violence episode earlier in the year, and his agent is telling MTV that all this is due to an allergic reaction to medication. Right.

Trashing Hotel Rooms Is a Longstanding Cool Thing to Do For Celebrities and Rock Stars
Famous people trashing swanky hotel rooms isn't news. It's almost standard operating procedure for some stars. In fact, Budget Travel has an interesting article tracking the history of Celebrity Hotel Room Trashing back to the 1930s, and giving F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, credit with beginning the trend. Also appearing in their list: Amy Winehouse, Keith Moon of the Who, Lindsay Lohan, Johnny Depp, Howard Hughes, and of course, Keith Richards.

But if you're NOT a celebrity, better think twice ....
Here in Miami Beach, we enjoy beautiful surroundings and welcome folk coming to visit from all over the world. Lots of celebrities pop up here to party, swim, surf, and shop. Heck, rapper T.I. got married here this summer. Miami Beach is a fun place to be.

But if you come here and you're setting in your hotel room, pondering throwing that lamp or breaking that chair, don't. First of all, the hotel is going to charge an unbelievable replacement cost onto that credit card you left with them downstairs - and you'll be wondering if what you broke shouldn't have been under a spotlight in the local museum for the price you gonna pay for it.
And, if your charge card doesn't cover the cost of damages for the hotel room you trash, then the hotel is going to call their lawyer to sue you (that call to the police where you get busted, that's a whole different ball game). And you are going to have to pay for the trashed hotel room damages along with a local lawyer like me to represent you in the case.

Not a nice way to remember your Miami Beach holiday. So, unless you've been on the cover of the Rolling Stone, or your daddy owns the hotel -- just say no to trashing your hotel room. It's better that we never met, brah.
